Dental Bridges in Little Rock, AR

If you are missing one or more teeth, the experienced dentists at Little Rock Family Dental Care can close, or “bridge” the gaps in your smile with dental bridges. A dental bridge is a false tooth that is sometimes cemented in place by crowns on either side of the gap. Bridges can be made from a variety of materials such as gold, but they are typically made from porcelain to blend in with your natural teeth.

Why Get a Dental Bridge?

Gaps in the teeth are dangerous to your overall oral health. Over time, the remaining teeth will rotate or shift into the empty spaces left behind by missing teeth. Not only will this result in a bad bite, but the imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

A bridge can be used to:

  • Restore your smile
  • Re-adjust your bite to properly distribute the force when you chew
  • Prevent your remaining teeth from moving out of the correct position
  • Prevent jaw problems
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Improve your speech and pronunciation
  • Maintain the shape of your face
  • Help maintain a healthy, vibrant smile

Dental Bridge Procedure

A dental bridge must be custom-fit to your mouth. First, one of our Little Rock dentists will take imprints and measurements of your mouth to ensure that your bridge will fit properly. If needed (most likely if your remaining teeth are compromised), temporary crowns may be placed to offer protection while the bridge is being created.

Remember, a dental bridge is not a surgical procedure, so you will stay awake throughout the treatment. For the bridge fitting, we will numb the area of your mouth with numbing gel and local anesthetic. Any temporary crowns will be removed and we will apply the cement that holds the bridge in place.

One of the best things about receiving a dental bridge is that the recovery is very minimal. Patients can typically eat normally as soon as the bridge has been placed.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are three main types of bridges:

Fixed Bridge

This is the most popular dental bridge and consists of a filler tooth that is attached to two crowns, which fit over the existing teeth and hold the bridge in place.

“Maryland” Bridge

This dental bridge is commonly used to replace missing front teeth and consists of a filler that is attached to metal bands that are bonded to the abutment teeth. The metal bands consist of a white-colored composite resin that matches your natural tooth color.

Cantilever Bridge

This bridge is often used when there are teeth on only one side of the span. A typical three-unit cantilever bridge consists of two crowned teeth positioned next to each other on the same side of the missing tooth space. The filler tooth is then connected to the two crowned teeth, which extend into the missing tooth space or end.
